Portrait of Marguerite of Lorraine, Duchess of Orléans

The portrait depicts Marguerite of Lorraine (1615–1672), Duchess of Orléans. The catalogue entry names Anthony van Dyck as the author with a question mark: the attribution is tentative, and the date of execution has not been established.

Marguerite, daughter of Duke François II of Lorraine, secretly married Gaston of Orléans, younger brother of King Louis XIII of France, in Nancy on the night before 3 January 1632. The king had the marriage declared invalid and gave his consent only in 1643, before his death; the couple then married a second time. Portraits of the duchess by Van Dyck are known, but whether this canvas is by his hand has not been established.

Oil on canvas.
