Marguerite Gérard. The Music Lesson

"The Music Lesson" is a genre scene by the French painter Marguerite Gérard (1761–1837), sister-in-law, pupil and collaborator of Jean-Honoré Fragonard. In Russia, Gérard's painting is represented only in the Yusupov collection.

In 1775, after her mother's death, Marguerite moved to Paris to live with her sister and Fragonard, and stayed in their home for about 30 years. She painted scenes of the family life of well-to-do townspeople, imitating the Dutch genre painters of the 17th century; her pictures were especially popular around 1800. When Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov began collecting works by artists who followed the "Little Dutch Masters", he also acquired "The Music Lesson".

The catalogue dates the painting to the 19th century. Oil on canvas.
