Torquato Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered. Paris, 1644
Torquato Tasso's (1544–1595) poem "Jerusalem Delivered" tells of the conquest of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. The first edition approved by the author appeared in Ferrara in 1581. This is the Paris edition of 1644, in Italian, under the title "Godfrey, or Jerusalem Delivered", printed at the Royal Printing House.
The Royal Printing House was founded in 1640 under Louis XIII on the advice of Cardinal Richelieu and was housed in the Louvre Palace. The book's title page is an engraved illustration; the signatures beneath the image name the designer Stella and the engraver Rousselet.
The book is bound in brown leather with mottled etching; the covers are framed with gold-tooled borders, and the spine bears gold ornament and a red leather label with the title. The edges are stained red, and the headband is braided and coloured. The text has engraved headpieces, initials and tailpieces.
