Vasily Surikov. The Kremlin Wall, Study for "The Morning of the Streltsy Execution"
This 1879 study by Vasily Surikov is connected with one of the best-known Russian history paintings, "The Morning of the Streltsy Execution". The artist began work on it in 1878 and finished it in 1881; the canvas is in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
The Kremlin wall forms the backdrop of the large painting. There are no people in the study: only the four-sided tent roof of a tower and a stretch of wall against a pearl-grey sky, rendered in reddish-brown, bluish-grey and green tones.
The study is painted in oil on canvas.
