"Mountain Landscape with Figures" by Ivan Aivazovsky
Ivan Aivazovsky (1817–1900) is known above all as one of the most famous marine painters of the 19th century, but this 1866 painting shows him on land: before the viewer is a mountain valley with carts and people. The museum places Aivazovsky's works in the romantic trend of landscape painting.
In the foreground is an ox cart loaded with barrels, with people standing in front of the oxen; a little further off another cart can be seen. On the left are vineyards and green trees. The composition is closed by a range of high mountains painted in grey-blue tones; at the foot of one of them houses are barely visible. In the lower right corner is the artist's signature "Айвазовский 1866", and on the reverse the inscription "Aiv.1866". Oil on canvas.
