Konstantin Gorbatov. View from the River of the Trinity Cathedral in Pskov

The New Jerusalem Museum holds the largest collection of works by Konstantin Gorbatov (1876–1945) in Russia: 120 pieces created both before his emigration and after he left Russia. This view of Pskov was painted in 1916, when the artist travelled widely and painted old Russian towns, Pskov among them.

On a snow-covered hill behind the fortress wall rises a massive cathedral. This is the Trinity Cathedral, the main building of the Pskov Kremlin (Krom); its present building was completed in 1699. To the left of the cathedral are a church and a bell tower, and in the distance is a riverbank densely built up with low stone houses.

Wooden boats lie on the river, which narrows into the distance. In one of them, in the left foreground, is a bearded man in yellow clothes and a brown hat, and a woman in a yellow coat, a long blue skirt and a yellow headscarf approaches the boat along the bank. In a boat by the opposite bank are two male figures. The picture is painted in oil on plywood.
