Robert Falk. Portrait of a Girl in Red
Robert Falk (1886–1958), one of the founders of the Jack of Diamonds group, painted this portrait in 1952 in Moldavia, a few years before his death.
Falk's works entered the New Jerusalem Museum when it began collecting 20th-century art in the 1970s. Today the museum's website names him among the masters of the 1920s–1930s represented in its collection of 20th–21st-century painting.
The girl sits turned slightly to the right, her legs apart and her hands folded in her lap. Her face is lively, with a half-open mouth and blue eyes, and her hair is plaited into two braids. She wears a red dress with a grey brooch at the collar. The face and hands are painted in greenish-brown tones, and the background is built on transitions of violet, blue and grey. Oil on canvas.
