Pavel Sokolov-Skalya. The February Revolution
This painting by Pavel Sokolov-Skalya is devoted to the events that opened the history of a new Russia in 1917. The artist painted it in Moscow in 1930–1931.
In February 1917 mass protests in Petrograd grew into an armed uprising; on 2 (15) March Nicholas II abdicated, and power passed to the Provisional Government headed by Prince Georgy Lvov. This ended the rule of the Romanov dynasty.
Pavel Sokolov-Skalya (1899–1961) trained in the studio of Ilya Mashkov and worked in history painting, posters and illustration; he later became a member of the USSR Academy of Arts and a People's Artist of the RSFSR. The work is painted in oil on canvas.
