Admiral Stepan Makarov's Book on the Icebreaker Yermak
"Yermak in the Ice" is a book by Vice Admiral Stepan Makarov about the world's first Arctic-class icebreaker. It gives a detailed account of the ship's construction and voyages together with a body of scientific material gathered on the expedition. The two-part edition contains 152 drawings, plans and pictures, as well as 5 maps.
The idea of the Yermak was Makarov's own: in 1897 he proposed building a powerful icebreaker for winter navigation to St Petersburg and for work in the Arctic Ocean, and headed the commission that drew up its technical specifications. The ship was built at the Armstrong Whitworth yard in Newcastle and launched in 1898. In the summer of 1899 the icebreaker sailed to Spitsbergen, and Makarov led studies of the ice, the ocean and marine fauna.
The book was published in 1901; the catalogue dates this copy "not earlier than 1901". Three years later, in 1904, Makarov was killed near Port Arthur aboard the battleship Petropavlovsk. The book is printed on paper and bound in board and cloth.
