Francisco Goya. "Victims of War", Plate 30 of "The Disasters of War"
Plate 30 of Francisco Goya's series "The Disasters of War" is titled "Victims of War" in the catalogue. The series of 82 plates was created in 1810–1820 as a protest against the brutal suppression of the anti-French uprising of the Second of May, the war on the Iberian Peninsula that followed, and the reactionary policy of the restored Bourbons. It was first printed only 35 years after the artist's death.
This impression was made in 1937. In besieged Madrid the Republican government decided to publish Goya's famous series: the original plates were brought in for printing and 19th-century paper was selected. Four series, "The Disasters of War" among them, were given by the trade unions of Spanish workers, through the Red International of Labour Unions (Profintern), to the Museum of the Revolution, the predecessor of today's Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
According to the catalogue record, the technique is etching on paper.
