George Grosz. The Apotheosis of Democracy
This lithograph by the German artist George Grosz was made in 1923–1924, in the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic. Grosz's drawings of the 1920s convey the growing absurdity and hopelessness of life in Germany.
George Grosz (1893–1959) became one of the founders of Berlin Dada in 1918 and later joined the New Objectivity movement. His main subject was Berlin life with its vices and pursuit of pleasure, and he was taken to court more than once over his drawings. In 1932 the artist emigrated to the United States and returned to West Berlin only in 1959.
The sheet is a lithograph on paper.
