Gustav Klutsis's Poster "Long Live the Leninist Komsomol, Many Millions Strong"
This 1932 poster was created by Gustav Klutsis, one of the pioneers of Soviet photomontage. The sheet is one of the impressions of a print run issued in Moscow and Leningrad.
Gustav Klutsis (1895–1938), an avant-garde artist and Constructivist, was born in Latvia and worked in Moscow. He is called one of the creators of colour photomontage: he made photomontages for books, magazines and the front pages of Pravda and Izvestia.
The artist's fate was tragic: in January 1938 he was arrested on fabricated charges of involvement in a "conspiracy of Latvian nationalists" and was shot soon afterwards. In 1956 Klutsis was posthumously rehabilitated.
