Dmitry Moor. Poster "Have You Volunteered?", 1920

A Red Army soldier in a budenovka cap looks straight at the viewer and points a finger at him: this is how one of the best-known posters of the Russian Civil War is built. Dmitry Moor created it in 1920, and this sheet is an impression from the print run of the same year, printed on paper.

In the summer of 1920 the Red Army was fighting on two fronts: the Polish campaign in the west and the battles against Wrangel's army in the south. The poster called on volunteers to join the Red Army. The abbreviation RSFSR appears at the upper left, and the slogan "Workers of the world, unite!" at the upper right. The composition goes back to the British 1914 poster featuring Lord Kitchener, but in Moor's version it gained a force of its own: according to the artist, people confessed to him that they felt ashamed for not having signed up yet.

In 1941 Moor used the same device again in the poster "How Have You Helped the Front?". His name is listed among the leading Soviet poster artists on the poster collection page of the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
