"Don't Chatter!" Poster by Nina Vatolina and Nikolai Denisov, 1941
"Don't Chatter!" is one of the best-known Soviet posters of the war years. It was created in the summer of 1941 by the artists Nina Vatolina and Nikolai Denisov, who were then husband and wife. The poster was printed in millions of copies, and this sheet is one of its impressions.
According to Vatolina's recollections, the idea came from an editor at Izogiz, who suggested a poster based on lines by Samuil Marshak about vigilance, which warn that in such days "the walls are listening". The poster shows a woman in a red headscarf with a serious, anxious face, looking at the viewer and making a gesture calling for silence.
The impression is printed on paper; the catalogue gives Moscow and Leningrad as the place of publication.
