The Mining Museum of the Saint Petersburg State Mining Institute is one of the oldest museums in Russia. It was founded in 1773 along with the Mining School. The museum houses more than 230,000 specimens collected from 80 countries worldwide. It is a unique collection of minerals, meteorites, geological-stratigraphic and paleontological collections, models related to mining and metallurgical practice of the 18th–19th centuries, cold weapons produced at the Zlatoust Armory, and jewelry by K. Fabergé. The institute's main library contains about 1.5 million publications. The museum occupies 20 halls with a total area of 2,800 sq. m. It was included in the State Register of Especially Valuable Objects in 1996. The museum is organized into three departments: Mineralogy, Geology, and the History of Mining and Metallurgical Technology. The Mining Museum is the custodian of rich and rare collections and has great scientific and historical significance for our country.
