Yelan Local History Museum of the Volgograd Region
About museum
In the center of Yelan, in a park area, is the Yelan Historical and Local History Museum. It draws attention with its high porch and a terem-style roof reminiscent of classic Russian buildings. The place still feels warm and cozy. The history of the museum began almost half a century ago, in 1961, when a room of military and labor glory was opened in the Pioneer House. The organizer and first director of the museum was Valentina Stepanovna Goloviznina — a participant in the Battle of Stalingrad who devoted her life to local history work. In 1974 the museum received the status of a 'people's museum.' The accumulation of exhibits took place not only in Yelan but also in the villages of the district. People donated their most precious items to the museum: ancient artifacts, grandmother's sarafans, letters from fallen relatives, old coins and icons. Today the museum is a center of beauty and spiritual culture, presenting the history of the development of the Yelan region. It displays photographs and documents about the October Revolution and the Civil War, as well as materials dedicated to the Great Patriotic War.
