Exhibition 'Military Gallery of the Borodino Field'
About museum
In the refectory church of the Beheading of John the Baptist at the Spaso-Borodino Monastery, founded by M. M. Tuchkova, an exhibition "Military Gallery of the Borodino Field" was opened, comprising 73 portraits of generals and officers of the Russian army who took part in the Battle of Borodino in 1812. All of them were depicted in the first half of the 19th century by well-known engravers and portraitists. Here you can see not only famous commanders but also the 'ordinary' generals. The portraits are presented as engravings and lithographs. Archaeological finds — lead and grapeshot bullets, grenade fragments, cannonballs, bayonets, and weapon fragments — emphasize the heroic dimension of the battle. The same building houses the museum ticket office, which serves other exhibitions, and a souvenir shop. By combining portraits of heroes with archaeological finds, the exhibition stands as a recognition of the merits of the defenders of the Fatherland in the heroic year of 1812.
