Kanonnikov House. Gorokhovets Historical and Architectural Museum
About museum
The walls of the Kanonnikov House are over three hundred years old and bear witness to many historical events and human destinies. It was built in medieval Rus and has passed through several eras of Russian statehood. The house's architecture is ascetic and unpretentious, and the absence of window casings on the second floor distinguishes it from other chamber houses. The facades are laconic and contain few decorative details, which vividly emphasize the forms of its austere and severe architecture. For several centuries the house belonged to the merchant family Kanonnikov, and in the 20th century, thanks to restoration, it was saved from destruction and transferred to cultural institutions for management. In 2018 a new archaeological exhibition, "Gorokhovets in the History of Russia: The Heritage of Generations," was installed there, revealing the secrets of archaeological sites such as Lysaya Gora, the hillfort on Nikolskaya Hill, the burial mounds on Puzhalova Hill, and others.
