Pyotr Klodt. Model of the Figurehead of the Corvette Bogatyr

This figure of a bogatyr, a hero of Russian epic tales, was created by Pyotr Klodt (1805–1867), the sculptor famed for the horse groups on the Anichkov Bridge in St Petersburg and the equestrian monument to Nicholas I. It is a model of the figurehead of the 17-gun corvette Bogatyr, made in St Petersburg in 1860.

The Bogatyr was the lead ship of a series of four sail-and-screw corvettes, and the whole class was named after her. She was laid down on 15 April 1859 at the New Admiralty in St Petersburg, and all four corvettes of the series entered service in 1862–1864.

The bogatyr wears a bearskin thrown over chain mail. In his bent, raised right hand he holds a club; his left arm is pressed to his body, the hand clenched into a fist. The figure is fixed to the stem, the foremost part of the hull. The model is made of plaster coated with bronze.
