Model of a Monument to Vice Admiral Stepan Makarov by Vsevolod Lishev
This bronzed sculpture depicts Vice Admiral Stepan Osipovich Makarov, a naval figure, oceanographer and polar explorer. He was killed on 31 March (13 April) 1904 near Port Arthur together with the battleship Petropavlovsk, which struck a mine. In 1913 a monument to Makarov, erected with voluntary donations, was unveiled in Kronstadt.
The catalogue describes the object as a model of the monument erected in Kronstadt. It was made and presented by Lieutenant General Vsevolod Alexandrovich Lishev, an amateur sculptor, as the plaque on the pedestal states: "Vice Admiral Makarov. Work and gift of Lt. Gen. V. A. Lishev".
Makarov, in a peaked cap and a long coat, stands on a rocky base with one arm stretched forward. The figure is made of bronzed plaster and set on a round plaster pedestal with a wooden stand. The model is dated to the late 19th – early 20th century.
