Drawn Portrait of Pavel Nakhimov, 1850
Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov (1802–1855) went down in history as the naval commander who routed the Turkish squadron at the Battle of Sinop on 18 (30) November 1853. On 28 June (10 July) 1855, during the defence of Sevastopol, he was mortally wounded on the Malakhov Kurgan and died two days later.
The portrait was drawn in 1850 by the artist Stepanov, whose first name is not given in the catalogue. At that time Nakhimov was a rear admiral: he had received this rank in 1845, and he became a vice admiral in 1852 and a full admiral in the spring of 1855. The catalogue describes the drawing as a portrait "with an autograph".
Nakhimov is shown in profile, wearing a peaked cap and a uniform with epaulettes; the date "1850" and a signature appear in the lower left corner. The drawing is executed in chalk, pencil and India ink on paper.
