Central Museum of the Russian Cossacks
About museum
The Central Museum of the Russian Cossacks is located in an old mansion on Bolshoy Levshinsky Lane, where, before the 1917 Revolution, the Palace Department was housed. The mansion was built in the classical style in the late 18th–early 19th centuries and is a federal cultural heritage monument.
The exhibition consists of 16 halls describing the history of all Cossack hosts and the guard formations of the Imperial Russian Army. More than 800 items from the State Historical Museum's collection are on display, covering a wide range of topics related to the history of the Cossacks: an outstanding numismatic collection; personal Cossack awards (charters, ceremonial kovshes and sabers, named medals); weapons, uniforms and banners; a collection of paintings, graphic works and sculpture; materials from written-source archives; maps; memorial items; etc.
A public space has been organized on the museum's basement floor: a video hall, a Cossack Culture Center and a multipurpose hall, which will be used to host various events.
