The Center for Contemporary Art is located in the central part of the city on the shore of a picturesque bay. It was originally the exhibition hall of the Union of Artists of Chuvashia 'Surpan', opened in 1991. Later the hall was transferred to the Union of Chuvash Artists and renamed 'Asam', and in 1996 it was transferred to the Ministry of Culture of the Chuvash Republic and became the Exhibition Department of the Chuvash State Art Museum. In 2004 the hall was renamed the 'Center for Contemporary Art' by a decree of the President of the Chuvash Republic. Temporary exhibitions are held here, aimed at acquainting residents and visitors of the Republic with contemporary exhibitions from regions of Russia and cultural capitals. The center also conducts educational activities together with the Institute of Contemporary Art and other centers of contemporary art in Russia and abroad.
