Peter the Great Botanical Garden
About museum
The Saint Petersburg Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in our country. It all began with the 'Apothecary Garden' established by Peter I in 1714, and in 1823 the Imperial Botanical Garden was founded. In 1823–1824 a quadrangle of greenhouses was constructed, which has survived to this day, and a park was also created. By 1913 the garden had become a center of national botanical science and one of the largest botanical institutions in the world. In the Botanical Garden you can see more than 7,500 different species of plants, including rare and exotic ones. Here you can see 'hanging gardens' of epiphytes, the lacy leaves of ferns, as well as fruiting mangoes, cacao, coffee, Flacourtia, bananas, citrus, Japanese loquat, fig, feijoa, pomegranate and other plants. Australian acacias bloom from February to July, and a strong, pleasant scent of jasmines greets visitors upon entering the greenhouse.
