Marble Sculpture "Diana with a Dog", 19th Century
The sculptural group "The Goddess Diana with a Dog" was created in the 19th century. Mythological subjects were popular in decorative sculpture, and the image of the huntress goddess was easily recognised by viewers.
Diana was the Roman goddess of plants and animals, of hunting, femininity and fertility; she was identified with the Greek Artemis. In art she was often shown with hunting dogs, with a bow, accompanied by nymphs.
The group is carved from marble. The catalogue lists the stages of working the stone: rough dressing, turning and polishing.
