A. A. Kharkov. The Azov Fortress

The painting "The Azov Fortress" by the Rostov artist A. A. Kharkov was created in 2001. It is devoted to the main historical symbol of Azov, the fortress around which the town's history unfolded for centuries.

The fortress of Azak was founded by the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century and became the northern port of the Ottoman Empire. It was besieged during the Azov campaigns of Peter I: the first campaign of 1695 ended in failure, and in July 1696 the garrison surrendered. Under the Treaty of Constantinople of 1700, Azov passed to Russia. Today the Alexeyevsky Gate, sections of earthen ramparts up to 15 metres high and the moat survive.

The painting was executed in oil on canvas in Rostov-on-Don.
