Gottlieb Siegfried Bayer's Book on the History of Azov, 1738
As its title says, the book describes "all events concerning Azov", from the founding of the town to its return to Russian rule. Its author was Gottlieb Siegfried Bayer (1694–1738), a German historian and philologist, one of the first members of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, a scholar of Russian antiquities and an orientalist.
Bayer wrote in German, and the book was translated into Russian by I. K. Taubert, an adjunct of the Academy of Sciences. It was published in St Petersburg by the Imperial Academy of Sciences in 1738, the year of the author's death. Bayer is regarded as the founder of the so-called Scandinavian school in Russian historiography, associated with the Normanist theory.
