View of the Spassky Gate in Moscow after Gérard Delabarthe, 1799
This 1799 engraving shows the Moscow Kremlin at the Spassky Gate and its surroundings: Moscow at the end of the 18th century. The plate was engraved by P. Lamini after a painting by the French artist Gérard Delabarthe and published by Johann Walser.
Delabarthe studied in Paris under Joseph-Marie Vien and worked in Russia from about 1787 to 1810. In the second half of the 1790s he produced paintings and watercolours of Moscow and its environs, which then served as models for numerous engravings in Russia and Western Europe. In 1799 the Moscow first-guild merchant Johann Walser published a series of 12 such engravings. It included the "View of the Spassky Gate and Its Surroundings in Moscow".
The sheet is executed on paper in line engraving and etching.
