Astrakhan State Art Gallery named after P. M. Dogadin
About museum
On December 15, 1918, in Astrakhan the P. M. Dogadin Museum — the Picture Gallery and Museum of the Council of Trade Unions of the Astrakhan Region — was opened. Pavel Mikhailovich Dogadin, an Astrakhan merchant and mechanical engineer educated in Moscow, donated to his native city in 1918 his collection of autographs, works on paper and paintings by Russian artists, as well as his library, furniture and mansion. Since 1921 the gallery has been located in the I. N. Plotnikov Estate, which is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. Over the years the museum has acquired items from the State Museum and private collections, as well as works by artists. Currently the gallery's holdings total more than 22,000 items. The permanent exhibition features works from the 17th–20th centuries, including icons, decorative and applied arts, paintings and sculpture. A special place is occupied by the collection of the Russian avant-garde.
