Astrakhan State Art Gallery named after P. M. Dogadin
About museum
On December 15, 1918, the P. M. Dogadin Museum — the Picture Gallery and the Museum of the Council of Trade Unions of the Astrakhan Region — was opened in Astrakhan. Pavel Mikhailovich Dogadin, an Astrakhan merchant and mechanical engineer educated in Moscow, donated to his native city his collection of autographs, graphic works and paintings by Russian artists, his library, furniture and the mansion. Since 1921 the gallery has been housed in the I. N. Plotnikov estate, which is a regional cultural heritage site. Over the years the museum has received items from the State Museum and private collections, as well as works by artists. Today the gallery's holdings comprise more than 22,000 items. The permanent exhibition features works from the 17th-20th centuries, including icons, decorative and applied arts, painting and sculpture. A special place is occupied by the collection of the Russian avant-garde.
