The Koptelovo Museum welcomed its first visitors at the end of October 1969. The exhibitions were housed in the former building of merchant L.M. Toropov's house.
The museum's founder, Alexander Grigoryevich Potoskuyev, collected antiques for more than 25 years. In the village he was often called an eccentric; many did not understand why he needed old cast-iron cauldrons, litovki (a type of ladle), pots, and weaving looms. Thanks to him, we can now see a huge collection of items that tell us about the life and everyday existence of peasants. Alexander Grigoryevich Potoskuyev was a passionate lover of his native land, an excellent connoisseur of peasant life, and a highly skilled veterinary professional. He gave his last museum tour in 1991. Under A.G. Potoskuyev, in May 1984 the museum was awarded the title "People's Museum".
In March 1993, Leonid Fedorovich Rusakov became the museum director. Thanks to Leonid Fedorovich Rusakov — a guide in the truest sense — the objects came alive and shared their secrets with us. An excellent guide and a person passionate about his work, Leonid Fedorovich served as director from 1993 to 2017.
In March 1993 the museum received the status of a municipal museum. In 1994 the Koptelovo Museum was designated the main museum of the district museum complex, gaining branches in the villages of Aramashevo, Kostino, Golubkovo, Mugai, and in the settlement of V-Sinyachikha.
