At the general education school in the village of Radishchevo, museum staff held a history hour called "On the Defense of the Fatherland," dedicated to the day of the victory of Russian warriors under Prince Alexander Nevsky over the German knights on Lake Peipus.
The children were told about the important historical event known as the "Battle on the Ice" and about the great commander Prince Alexander Nevsky. It was also noted that the significance of the victory of the Russian warriors was truly historic: in the battle on Lake Peipus the prince demonstrated his military talent, and the Russian army displayed an example of the tactics and strategy of the time. The students learned that the name of this great commander holds a special place in Russia's centuries-long history. The day of the victory of the Russian warriors led by Prince Alexander Nevsky over the German knights on Lake Peipus was entered into Russia's Calendar of Military Glory. The Novgorod prince was an outstanding politician, diplomat, and great warrior who never lost a single battle. He became a true guardian of the Orthodox faith and was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church for his merits.
During the event excerpts were read from E. Asadov's poem "Russia Did Not Begin with the Sword" and K. Simonov's "The Battle on the Ice," and video clips "The Battle on the Ice" and "The Battle on Lake Peipus" were also shown. At the end, the children answered quiz questions and collected notable sayings.
The history hour helped touch the children's hearts and arouse a sense of pride in our people and their glorious history; it helped them learn to show sympathy and compassion for the warriors who died in battle and for their families and loved ones.
