The Museum of World Calligraphy in the village of Orekhovo, Ryazan Oblast, opened its doors on September 10, 2022. The basis of the exhibition was the private collection of Alexey Yuryevich Shaburov — director of the Association of Private Museums of Russia. The museum's rich holdings include more than 4,000 calligraphic works created in the 20th and early 21st centuries. The jewel of the collection is a handwritten Constitution of the Russian Federation, written by a team of calligraphers led by the chairman of the presidium of the National Union of Calligraphers, Petr Petrovich Chobitko.
Calligraphy is one of the branches of the visual arts, the art of shaping characters in various manners. The history of calligraphy traces back to the origins of writing and literacy. The art of beautiful writing received particularly special development in the East: in China, Japan, and Korea. Contemporary calligraphic art has found wide application in art, design, and various types of decoration.
The Museum of World Calligraphy became the first institution dedicated to the art of beautiful writing. Here you can see splendid examples of Slavic and European scripts, works executed in the calligraphic techniques of the Arabic and Hebrew schools, and refined examples of Chinese writing. In addition, the museum's exhibition features books that teach the art of calligraphy, rare manuscript copies, and calligraphers' tools.
Extensive educational work aimed at popularizing the art of calligraphy is carried out both within the museum's walls and beyond. Various lectures and master classes are regularly held, devoted to a wide range of calligraphic topics and styles. The events are intended for a broad age audience and are of interest to both children and adults. The museum operates by prior appointment; the cost of a single admission ticket is 300 rubles.
