Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov was a Russian and American writer, poet, translator, literary scholar and entomologist. Vladimir Nabokov was born in 1899 in Saint Petersburg into an aristocratic family, received an excellent education and was fluent in several foreign languages. His literary debut took place in 1916 with the publication of a collection of poems. After the revolution the Nabokov family emigrated, and Vladimir continued his education at the University of Cambridge.
Nabokov gained recognition after the release of the novel "Mashenka" in 1926. In the 1930s he wrote such notable works as "King, Queen, Knave", "The Luzhin Defense" and "The Gift". Facing the threat of the Nazi regime, in 1940 he moved to the United States, where he began writing in English. In America Nabokov taught literature and in 1955 published the novel "Lolita", which brought him worldwide fame and financial independence. The success allowed him to devote himself entirely to literature.
In the 1960s Nabokov moved to Switzerland, where he produced his last major works and the autobiography "Other Shores". Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov died in 1977 in Montreux.
