Vladimir Pavlovich Shpakovsky – the founder of the Essentuki Historical and Local Lore Museum and an honorary citizen of the spa town of Essentuki. Vladimir Pavlovich Shpakovsky was born in Irkutsk. After graduating from the Tbilisi Real School and Rostov State University, in the early 1930s he took part in collectivization in the stanitsa Petropavlovskaya of Krasnodar Krai. There he also served for six years as the headmaster of a school where, among others, pupils from a labor colony were educated.
In 1936 Shpakovsky moved to Essentuki, where he first worked as a teacher, then served as deputy director, and later headed the teacher-training college. At the start of the Great Patriotic War he volunteered for the front, taking part in the battles for Kiev, in the defense of Stalingrad, and in the fighting on the Kursk salient. After being wounded and concussed in 1944 he was demobilized and returned to Essentuki. In retirement Vladimir Pavlovich engaged in active public work and was a member of the "Znanie" ("Knowledge") society. Vladimir Pavlovich Shpakovsky died on 4 September 1988. In recognition of his merits, in 1990 Shpakovsky was posthumously awarded the title of honorary citizen of the city of Essentuki, and the local historical and local lore museum was named after him.
