Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov – a Russian painter and architect, a master of historical and folk painting. Viktor Vasnetsov was born in 1848 in the village of Lopyal in the Vyatka Governorate. At first he planned to become a priest like his father, but in 1867 he went to Saint Petersburg to study painting. Vasnetsov studied at Ivan Kramskoi's drawing school and at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he received several awards for his achievements.
From 1878 Vasnetsov lived and worked in Moscow. He became famous for his monumental paintings on historical and fairy-tale subjects, such as "After the Battle", "Bogatyrs" and others. In 1892 he was granted the title of academician. Vasnetsov also worked on designing buildings and stage sets for theatrical productions. He designed his own house and studio in Moscow, as well as the façade of the Tretyakov Gallery. Vasnetsov also created murals and mosaics for churches. In particular, he worked on the murals of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kyiv, the Church of the Ascension in Saint Petersburg, and the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist on Presnya in Moscow.
The artist had five children, including a daughter, Tatyana, who also became an artist. Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov died in 1926. His works are held in the major museums of Russia, including the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum. He remains one of the most famous and beloved Russian painters.
