Vsevolod Fyodorovich Rudnev – an officer of the Russian Navy, a rear admiral, a hero of the Russo-Japanese War. He was born in Dinamunde into the family of a naval officer. After his father's death in 1864 the family moved to Lyuban. In 1872 Rudnev entered the Naval School in Saint Petersburg and graduated with the Nakhimov Prize. After the school he served on the training ship «Petropavlovsk», and then on the cruiser «Afrika», on which he made a circumnavigation. In 1888 Rudnev successfully transferred a new steam transport «Pyotr Veliky» from France to Kronstadt. In 1893 he received the rank of Captain 2nd Rank and served as senior officer on the battleship «Imperator Nikolai I», making another circumnavigation.
In 1900 Rudnev was transferred to the Far East. He served as senior assistant to the port commander in Port Arthur, and in 1902 became commander of the cruiser «Varyag». His courage and bravery during the Russo-Japanese War brought him wide recognition. In 1905 Rudnev retired with the rank of rear admiral because he refused to punish sailors who expressed dissatisfaction with the tsarist regime. Despite this, the Japanese Emperor Meiji (Mutsuhito) awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition of the heroism of the Russian sailors. In his later years Rudnev lived in the Tula Governorate at his estate. He died on 20 July 1913 at the age of 57.
