Vsevolod Emilievich Meyerhold – an actor, director, teacher, and one of the reformers of theatre. Vsevolod Emilievich Meyerhold, born Karl Kazimir Theodor Meyerhold, was born in Penza into a German family. After finishing gymnasium he entered the law faculty of Moscow University, converted to Orthodoxy and changed his name. Soon he transferred to the Theatrical and Musical School.
In 1898, after graduating from the school, Meyerhold joined the troupe of the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT), where he played numerous roles. In 1902 he left the MAT and began working independently as a director: he worked in various theatres, including the Alexandrinsky and Mariinsky Theatres.
After the October Revolution, Meyerhold became one of the leaders of Soviet theatre, joined the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) (VKP(b)) and headed institutions for stage directing. In 1939 Meyerhold was arrested on charges of anti-Soviet activity and was executed in 1940. He was rehabilitated in 1955.
