Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov was a Russian painter and draftsman, a master of symbolic depictions of 'gentry nests'. Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov was born in Saratov on April 2 (14), 1870. In childhood he suffered a serious spinal injury, as a result of which he developed a hump and began to experience accompanying health problems that plagued the artist throughout his life. Borisov-Musatov studied at the Saratov Alexandro-Mariinsky Real School, and later studied fine arts in Saratov, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Paris.
In 1895 Borisov-Musatov traveled through the Crimea and the Caucasus and joined the Union of Russian Artists. From 1898 he lived mainly in Saratov, and from 1901 at the estate of Zubrilovka. In 1902 he created his famous painting "The Pond". From 1903 he lived in Podolsk, and from 1905 in Tarusa. Viktor Borisov-Musatov died on October 26 (November 8), 1905 and was buried on the high bank of the Oka.
