Terentiy Semyonovich Maltsev

Terentiy Semyonovich Maltsev – a plant breeder and agricultural innovator in the USSR. He was born into a poor peasant family in the village of Maltsevo, Perm Governorate (now Kurgan Oblast). After serving in the army and spending time in German captivity (1917–1921), Maltsev returned home and began working in 1923. From 1930 he worked as a field crop specialist at the kolkhoz 'Zavety Lenina'. In 1935 he was a delegate to the All-Union Congress of kolkhoz shock-workers, and in 1939 he joined the VKP(b).

In 1950 Maltsev headed an experimental station created at the initiative of I. V. Stalin. From 1951 he worked on developing a no-till system of soil cultivation, using a plow of his own design and a five-field crop rotation system. His achievements were highly regarded: he became an Honorary Academician of VASKhNIL (the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences), was elected a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and of the RSFSR, and was also a deputy of the Kurgan Regional Council. Terentiy Semyonovich Maltsev passed away on 11 August 1994 and was buried in his native village of Maltsevo.
