Shigabutdin Marjani

Shigabutdin Marjani was a Tatar Muslim theologian, educator, ethnographer, archaeographer, orientalist, and teacher. He was born on January 16, 1818 in the village of Yabynchi (now the Atninsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan). He received his education at the madrasa in the village of Tashkichu in the Kazan Uyezd, as well as in Bukhara and Samarkand. At seventeen he began teaching at a madrasa and created his own textbook on Persian morphology.
In 1838 Marjani went to Bukhara to continue his studies, and then to Samarkand. After an eleven-year stay abroad, in 1848 he returned to his homeland, and in March 1850 he was appointed imam-mudarris of the 1st Kazan Mosque. In 1867 the Orenburg Muslim Spiritual Assembly appointed him akhun and mukhtasib of Kazan.
In 1870 Marjani's book "Nazratul-Haqq" was published, containing religious-reformist ideas that were innovative for that time. This work brought him wide fame both at home and throughout the Muslim East. Shigabutdin Marjani died on April 15, 1889 and was buried in the Novo-Tatar Cemetery in Kazan.
