Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev – a Russian composer, pianist, teacher, music theorist, and musical public figure. A pupil of P. I. Tchaikovsky. He began studying piano at the age of five. In 1866 he moved to Moscow and enrolled as an auditor at the Moscow Conservatory.
At the conservatory Taneyev studied with the leading teachers of the time: N. G. Rubinstein (piano), P. I. Tchaikovsky (composition), and N. A. Hubert (counterpoint, fugue). In 1875 he graduated from the conservatory with a gold medal. Taneyev premiered many of Tchaikovsky's major piano works and also performed his own compositions.
From 1878 to 1905 Taneyev taught at the Moscow Conservatory, heading the orchestral and choral classes, and served as director of the conservatory from 1885 to 1889. In 1905 Taneyev left the conservatory in protest against the expulsion of striking students. He took part in the founding of the People's Conservatory. Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev died in 1915.
