Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev was a Russian theatrical and artistic figure, writer, and patron of the arts. He was born in the Novgorod Governorate into a noble family of a career military officer. In 1896 he graduated from the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University while simultaneously studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Rimsky-Korsakov. Diaghilev was interested in painting, theatre, and art history.
In 1898 Diaghilev, together with Alexander Benois, founded the association 'Mir Iskusstva' (the 'World of Art') and became co-editor of the journal of the same name. He published works by contemporary artists and writers and also wrote his own articles and reviews of performances, exhibitions, and books.
Diaghilev's chief achievement was the 'Russian Seasons' (1909–1929), which presented the finest achievements of Russian art abroad. He gathered a company of leading cultural figures of the early 20th century and helped popularize Russian opera and ballet. Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev died in Venice on 19 August 1929.
