Spiridon Dmitrievich Drozhzhin was a poet and writer. He was born on December 18, 1848. The future writer received only a limited education, having attended school for merely 'two incomplete winters'. At twelve he moved to Petersburg to earn a living and used all his spare time to visit the Public Library.
At sixteen Drozhzhin wrote his first poem. His 'Song about the Sorrow of the Good Lad' was published in 1873 in the magazine 'Gramotey'. From that moment Drozhzhin began actively publishing his works in various journals. Much of Drozhzhin's work is devoted to the theme of the Russian village and to nature.
From the age of sixteen he kept a personal diary, recording important events in it. Many of his poems were set to music. S. D. Drozhzhin was acquainted with Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, who highly praised the writer's work. During his literary career the poet wrote thirty-five books. Spiridon Dmitrievich Drozhzhin died on December 24, 1930.
