Sergey Afanasyevich Zverev was a Yakut folk singer and olonkho storyteller. He was born on July 8, 1900, in the Tyubyaysky nasleg of the Suntarsky ulus in the Yakut region. From the age of eleven Zverev worked in various Yakut settlements, labored at the Bodaybinsky gold-mining claims and hunted in the Yessey taiga. During this time he learned singing from experienced folk singers. From 1940 to 1945 he was an actor at the Nyurbinsky kolkhoz theatre. In 1939 Zverev was admitted to the Union of Soviet Writers.
In 1947 Zverev was invited to the Yakut State Musical and Dramatic Theater as a consultant for the creation of the opera "Nyurgun Bootur." Zverev made a significant contribution to the development of Yakut dance culture, creating more than 30 dances, including "Algys," "Sitim," "Selbereeske," "Khotoy" and "Kymys Urde." In 1959 he staged the opera-ballet "Suoĭaldyya Tolbonnooh." His dance "Oĭuordar" ("Uzory" — "Patterns") gained wide recognition and was repeatedly performed on stages in Moscow and other cities. Zverev was awarded the title Honored Art Worker of the Yakut ASSR (1951) and Honored Cultural Worker of the RSFSR (1968). Sergey Afanasyevich Zverev passed away on March 7, 1973.
