Sergey Yakovlevich Lemeshev – a Soviet opera singer, a lyric tenor. He was born on July 10, 1902, in the Tver Governorate. He graduated from a church-parish school and studied shoemaking in Saint Petersburg. After the Revolution he returned to his native village, studied at an arts-and-crafts school and took part in amateur performances.
In 1920 Lemeshev was conscripted into the Red Army, and in 1921, thanks to his unique voice, he entered the Moscow Conservatory, which he graduated from in 1925. His operatic debut took place in 1926 in Sverdlovsk. In the following years he performed in Harbin and Tiflis, singing leading roles.
In 1931 Lemeshev was invited to the Bolshoi Theatre, where he successfully performed principal roles in well-known operas. In addition to his singing career, he taught at the Moscow Conservatory, hosted radio programs, and led the vocal ensemble of All-Union Radio. Sergey Yakovlevich Lemeshev passed away on June 26, 1977, in Moscow.
