Nikolai Petrovich Rakitsky was a Soviet agronomist and collector. He was born in Yevpatoria. He finished gymnasium, studied at the Philology Faculty of Kiev University, and then at an agricultural academy in Bavaria. In 1912–1913 he did practical work in Switzerland and France. In 1922 he moved to Moscow, and in 1926 he settled in Tarusa.
In 1929 he established an experimental arboretum in Tarusa, where he worked on acclimatizing plants from other climatic zones, eventually assembling a unique collection of plants. His work in agronomy produced significant results and enriched the local flora.
Besides his scientific interests, Rakitsky was an avid collector. In 1963 he initiated the creation of an art gallery in Tarusa and donated a substantial part of his collection to the town, including more than 200 works of painting, porcelain, faience, glass and antique lace. For his contribution to the cultural development of Tarusa he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the town. Nikolai Petrovich Rakitsky died in 1979 and was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
