Nikolai Vasilievich Melnikov – a Soviet engineer and scientist in the field of mining. Nikolai Vasilievich Melnikov was born on February 15, 1909, in Sarapul (now in the Udmurt Republic). From 1930 Melnikov held various positions: from shift engineer at a mine to director of the large Krasnaya Zarya plant. In 1933 he completed his studies at the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute.
In 1947 and 1951 Melnikov defended his candidate's and doctoral dissertations. At the age of 44 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In subsequent years Melnikov held leadership positions at the Institute of Mining, the State Committee for the Fuel Industry, and also served as a minister and deputy of the Supreme Soviet; he was a member of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences and chairman of the Commission for the Study of Productive Forces and Natural Resources. Melnikov founded and headed the Institute for Problems of Integrated Development of the Subsoil. Twice, in 1946 and 1979, he was awarded the USSR State Prize for his significant contribution to the development of the mining industry. Nikolai Vasilievich Melnikov died on December 7, 1980, and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. In 1981 he was posthumously awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarapul".
