Nikolai Nikolaevich Palmov was a Russian, Soviet scholar, historian, and professor, the founder of Kalmyk studies and the founder of the first Kalmyk museum. Nikolai Palmov was born in Astrakhan; he graduated from the Astrakhan Theological Seminary and the Kiev Theological Academy, defending a thesis on 'The Taking of Monastic Vows'.
From 1912 to 1918 Palmov taught at the Kiev Theological Academy, while also being a member of the Kiev and Moscow Archaeological Societies. Upon returning to his hometown in 1918, Palmov continued his academic and teaching career at Astrakhan University, and from 1920 at the Institute of Public Education. After the university was closed in 1921, he led the organization of the archive-and-museum section in the Department of Public Education of the Kalmyk Autonomous Region and organized the creation of an archive and the first national Kalmyk museum. On March 23, 1921, thanks to his efforts, a local history museum opened in Elista, later becoming the National Museum of Kalmykia. In 1922 Palmov became the museum's director and published the fundamental work 'An Outline of the History of the Kalmyk People During Their Time Within the Borders of Russia'.
The scientist's life was tragically cut short on February 11, 1934, in Astrakhan. Nikolai Nikolaevich Palmov is regarded as the founder of Kalmyk studies and one of the key figures in the development of Kalmyk culture.
