Nikolai Konstantinovich Boshnyak – an officer of the Imperial Russian Navy, Captain 2nd Rank, and a participant in the Amur expedition of Admiral G. I. Nevelskoy. He was born on 3 (15) September 1830 in the village of Ushakovo, Kostroma Governorate, in the family of a retired major who had taken part in the Patriotic War of 1812. He belonged to the noble Boshnyak family. In 1842 he entered the Naval Cadet Corps, and in 1849 he received the rank of midshipman.
In 1851 Boshnyak was transferred to the Amur expedition and appointed chief of the Nikolaevsky Post. In 1852 he explored Sakhalin: he traversed its western coast from the Nevelskoy Strait to the Dui River and discovered a deposit of coal. He also surveyed the lower reaches of the Amur and the basin of the Amgun River, discovered the Bureya Range and several lakes. In 1853 Boshnyak explored the western shore of the Tatar Strait, discovered the Imperial Harbor and raised the Russian flag there.
In 1855 Boshnyak was appointed adjutant to the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia. In 1856 he was transferred to the Baltic Fleet, and he served on the frigate "Ilya Muromets", sailing in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. In 1865, with the rank of Captain 2nd Rank, he retired from service for health reasons and went to the Italian city of Monza for treatment, where he remained for the rest of his life. Nikolai Konstantinovich Boshnyak died in a psychiatric hospital in 1899.
