Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov was a Soviet statesman and naval figure, Hero of the Soviet Union, Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union. He was born on July 11, 1904, in the village of Medvedki in the Vologda Governorate. In 1919 he began naval service as a sailor in the Severo-Dvinsk Military River Flotilla.
After graduating from the naval school and academy, Kuznetsov commanded the cruiser "Chervona Ukraina". He took part in the Spanish Civil War as a naval attaché and advisor (1936–1937), and later served as deputy and commander of the Pacific Fleet, taking part in the battles at Lake Khasan. During his career he held high state posts: People's Commissar of the Navy of the USSR, Minister of the Navy of the USSR, Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR, and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.
Kuznetsov made a significant contribution to the development of the Soviet Navy. At his initiative Navy Day was established and a three-tier system of operational readiness was introduced. He also left a rich literary legacy, writing memoirs and numerous articles on naval history, restoring the names of sailors who had died and those who had been repressed. Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov died in 1974. He was posthumously reinstated to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union.
